Porgera District, Papua New Guinea
Brief
Ecoresolve intends to establish a monitoring baseline for forest disturbances and land use land cover spatial changes in the Porgera District, Enga Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Ecoresolve intends to conduct land use land cover (LULC) analysis by utilizing a mixed approach of both conventional and state-of-the-art techniques by making use of remotely sensed data from drone surveys, satellite images, and field data from GPS surveys. The project proposes to undertake land use land cover changes mapping in the Porgera district, Enga province, Papua New Guinea (143°28’ E, 5°18’ S, area: 4830 km²) from 1990 to 2020, and make a recent up-to-date accurate map of the current landscape. In addition, establishing a baseline for forest disturbances and assessing land use patterns in Porgera. The initial intended classes include; Forest, Grassland, cultivated, developed areas (Urban), water bodies among various others. In order to achieve the objectives, this project will carry out several activities such as pre-field planning, drone survey, GPS field survey, and remote sensing data collection, data preparation, satellite and UAV image processing and GIS analysis utilizing all data.
Specific goals
provinceProvide replicable workflow for monitoring forest degradation and updating land use land cover map in the future specific
- Provide a baseline for forest monitoring and up-to-date-status
- Map and characterize the land use and land cover of Porgera locality in Enga Province[The initial intended classes include; Forest, Grassland, cultivated, developed (Urban), waterbodies]
- Provide insights into land use land cover spatial change patterns over the years which is necessary for supporting resource planning in the province
- Provide replicable workflow for monitoring forest degradation and updating land use land cover map in the future specific

Impact
The detailed mapping of forested area is anticipated to support improved sustainable forest management by allowing for the monitoring and evaluation of the current practices and initiative by providing a baseline for future comparison. The status update on the current land use land cover is expected to provide stakeholders and decision makers with needed information for better use of the natural resources and land. It is also anticipated that up-to-date understanding of the current land use land cover status would contribute toward mitigating the current land tenure issue through enhancing the communication between stakeholder and establishing a common ground for a shared vision. Revealing the spatial changes pattern of the land use land cover in the area is expected to provide decision makers and stakeholder with holistic understanding of the previous and current practices implication and thus most needed information for informed decision making and policy design.
